A Holiday Wish, founded by Paul K. Cullen in November 2003, is a non-political organization dedicated to supporting US service men and women overseas. We ask you to take a few minutes to send a card or letter expressing your thanks, prayers, and appreciation to the men and women serving in the US military for their sacrifice and service. Especially on holidays. When military personnel receive a card, being more than 6,000 miles from home and fighting for our country, it means a lot to them.

I have been a member of Freemasonry, Shriners of North America, and Scottish Rite for many years. My twin brother, Reed, and father are also members and serve as executive directors of A Holiday Wish. Shriners of North America and Scottish Rite are Christian organizations dedicated to charitable giving. Shriners of North America and Scottish Rite support Shriners and Scottish Rite Hospitals for Children. They are known worldwide for treatment of pediatric orthopaedic conditions, neurological disorders, burns, and spinal cord injuries. Many members of Freemasonry, Shriners of North America, and Scottish Rite are US Veterans.

Over the last several years, I have come in contact with many US service men and women at VA hospitals, nursing homes, and military facilities. Many have served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, and WWII. When I met Staff Sergeant Sean O'Dowd and Corporal Christopher Seidl, US Army, I knew it was time for me to start A Holiday Wish. Staff Sergeant Sean O'Dowd served our country in Afghanistan and Corporal Christopher Seidl served in Iraq. They are truly heroes.

We are asking schools, churches, businesses, and individuals to help us and encourage people to send cards, letters or care packages to our troops overseas.

*    Use a first class stamp for mailing cards and letters.

*    The cheapest way to send a package is by Priority Mail Large Flat-Rate Box (12" x 12" x 5 ½" or 800 cubic inches). It costs $10.95 (including delivery) to an APO/FPO address.

*    If you want the person who gets your card or letter to contact you include your name, address, or email address.

*    It is important that you send a POSITIVE message with your card or letter. The more positive the message the better. Thank them for serving our country! Cards and letters should begin with Dear Soldier.
*    If you want to mail a care package DO NOT send food items and non-food items together in one box. Send food or non-food items in separate boxes.

*    What is needed: Beef Jerky, Powdered Gatorade, Sweetened Koolaid, Hooah Energy Bars, Power Bars, Granola Bars, Dried Fruit, Chap Stick, Wheat Thins, Peanuts, Assorted Nuts, Pringles, Trail Mix, Top Ramen Noodles, Gummy Bears.

Priority Mail is the packaging of choice. To address the current demand, the Postal Service has created a special "kit" that contains the necessary mailing materials based on the most popular items ordered to send care packages to the troops.

All care packages must be addressed to INDIVIDUAL SERVICE MEMBERS as per the Department of Defense. The Mili-Pac features detailed addressing information for all mail destined for military units overseas. The address block on the Mili-Pac includes Service member full name; Rank or rating; Military organization or unit; APO/FPO (Air/Army Post Office or Fleet Post Office) with 9-digit ZIP Code.

A detailed description of contents is required on the customs form. Do not list items such as "food," "medicine," "gifts," or other general terminology. The contents of APO/FPO mail follow International mailing requirements.
